Liver stem cells

What better argument than that of stem cells to start the new year: totipotent cells have been used to treat serious liver disease. In Brazil, 15 people were chosen from those on the waiting list for liver transplantation and were – on a voluntary basis – subjected to cell therapy. "We are still in a strictly experimental phase," underlines Luiz Guilherme Costa Lyra, the hepatologist coordinating research at the Sao Rafael si Salvador hospital in Bahia, an offshoot of the San Raffaele hospital in Milan. "And it must be very clear that the therapy is not available for any patient other than those we have in the protocol, it is useless for someone to write to us to enter the study". «However» continues the researcher «we must admit that the results are decidedly interesting and we intend to continue along the path we have taken». Stem cell -based therapy had already passed the safety and efficacy tests on animals and the safety tests on humans, and three years ago the clinical efficacy trials on humans also began. The specialists of Sao Rafael in Salvador involved in the experiment a group of people whose only hope was a liver transplant, but who would hardly have received the organ in time given their position on the waiting list. And cell therapy has allowed for a significant improvement in their conditions. Tests began in 2000 on animals, where stem cells were able to cure severe liver problems: liver fibrosis, caused by infections, toxic substances or alcohol abuse. The procedure consists of withdrawing some bone marrow from the iliac crest (the anterior projection of the pelvis) with a syringe, then transferring the tissue to the laboratory for isolation and processing of the cells, and then reinfusing them into the liver of the patient through the hepatic artery, all within two and a half hours. The good results of this experiment, supported by contemporary, analogous experiences of two research groups in Japan and Great Britain, convinced the Bahian researchers to make the "leap" towards the test of efficacy (and no longer just safety) of therapy in humans. It must be clarified that this experiment was possible in Brazil because the law in this State does not oblige the verification on primates before moving on to humans and therefore some time will have to pass before it is legalized in Europe. Nanotubes and stem cells for bone reconstruction

It has been found that the use of implants made of titanium nanotubes together with stem cells can accelerate the growth of bone tissue. The group of bioengineers from the University of California – San Diego used nano-biotechnology technologies that made it possible to carry out this experiment. In fact, they were able to place… Continua a leggere Nanotubes and stem cells for bone reconstruction

HIV: new therapeutic strategies

To eliminate HIV from the body, at a minimum, infected, quiescent T cells would need to be forced to produce viral proteins. This would cause the destruction of these cells, which would be attacked by drugs that block the spread of the virus from one cell to another. New data suggest that an intensification of… Continua a leggere HIV: new therapeutic strategies

Stem cell transplant to treat diabetes

Medical science is increasingly aiming at the prevention and repair of the defect at the origin of the disease, according to a new philosophy aimed at intervening further upstream of the pathogenic process than on the final effects with devices or treatments aimed at mitigating rather than definitively curing a disease, such as diabetes. Molecule regenerates the heart

A new molecule (HBR) has been synthesized capable of regenerating the heart immediately after a heart attack and increasing the efficacy of subsequent stem cell transplantation. The revolutionary molecule is capable of immediately reducing the cardiac cell mortality produced by the infarction and inducing the formation of new coronary vessels together with the recruitment of… Continua a leggere Molecule regenerates the heart

Youth elixir

Another surprise to come regarding the enormous abilities of skin cells. Fibroblasts , which we had already mentioned because they are capable, united with an oocyte, of generating a stem cell, now ensure a long life for young and perfect skin. Goodbye to the old scalpel and annoying botulinum injections, it is now possible to… Continua a leggere Youth elixir

Hopes from gene therapy for Parkinson's

Yesterday World Parkinson's Day was celebrated, a conference organized in the Campidoglio by the Italian Parkinsonian Association (AIP). The data reported is certainly not comforting: in Italy alone there are four hundred thousand people with Parkinson's disease, a disease that affects 3 people out of every thousand (about 1% of the over 65s) and which… Continua a leggere Hopes from gene therapy for Parkinson's

Stem cells from the umbilical cord to save a 2 year old

The doctors at the Dallas hospital have used stem cells , coming from the umbilical cord of the child himself stored in a special bank, to treat a very rare form of cancer which frequently leads to death.
