In Barcelona where ECCO, the European Cancer Conference is taking place, researchers from Synta Pharmaceuticals presented a drug that would give good hopes against skin cancer called melanoma. The drug, still unnamed, would be able to stop or at least delay the development of melanoma by acting on the metabolism of oxygen in tumor cells. In detail, cancer cells are very rich in oxygen reagents (reactive oxygen species, ROS) and a high percentage of 0 2 does nothing but stimulate the process of cellular apoptosis induced by the mitochondria. Dr. Alex Eggermont states that the discovered system for enriching cells does not affect healthy cells at all, instead strongly affecting the turoral cells. Melanoma is one of the strongest tumors: about 70% of patients affected by melanoma do not survive. Hopefully, more information will arrive soon
