The do-it-yourself dentist is becoming increasingly popular and the products can be found on the internet, but also in pharmacies where they are normally sold. Among the most requested are whitening kits, fixing kits for bridges and caps and bites to avoid grinding your teeth while you sleep. The main reason for resorting to DIY is certainly savings: a bite prepared at home costs less than a third of that implanted by a dentist, while teeth whitening can cost up to a tenth of a professional one. The teeth whitening kit is a very common product both in pharmacies and on the internet, try to search Google for "teeth whitening" out of curiosity and you will notice for yourself the enormous quantity of sponsored and non-sponsored websites that sell special treatments. The dexterity required for teeth whitening is relatively limited to a few steps, hence perhaps the wide diffusion. The greatest risks in this case are irritation of the gums and mucous membranes due to direct contact with the product, sensitization to temperature up to a sensation of pain due to contact between the bleaching agent and the nerve. Fortunately, most of these effects disappear within a few days. Another product that is normally found in pharmacies is Pontefix and is sold for just over 16 euros, but its use does not appear so simple unless you have a certain dexterity. To understand this, just read the first instructions: "Warning, the paste hardens in two minutes". Therefore you need to act quickly otherwise you risk making a big mess and having to pay a premium to the dentist who has to fix it. The anti-grinding bite costs around 50 euros, but even here the procedure is not simple: "hold the adaptation device and energetically widen the arc to make the three pins penetrate the three frontal housings. Then immerse the bite in the water boiling for 6 seconds then insert the same into the mouth closing the teeth without clenching too much. Warning: keeping the lips closed, suck firmly in order to eliminate the air inside the mouth, for at least one minute. This will create an under – empty, thus obtaining maximum stability of the Bite. Franco Cantagalli, president of the Order of Pharmacists of Bologna, raised the alarm on the use of these home procedures, stating: "These are all difficult and sometimes risky operations. If don't be careful, you risk cementing a bridge askew in your mouth. This is why I advise my clients against such a daring DIY. Unlike some of my colleagues, I do not believe that the f armacia should behave like a supermarket, where you enter, buy and go. I always give advice because this is the role of the pharmacist». And on the internet, who alerts potential buyers?
