In Italia, con l’avanzare dell’influenza aviaria, non si è più parlato del problema della encefalopatia bovina spongiforme (BSE), chiamata comunemente sindrome della mucca pazza. In America invece, la FDA assieme alla CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency), sta varando delle importanti regole sui mangimi destinati agli animali per salvaguardare la salute dei consumatori. In particolare, è stata proibita la somministrazione agli animali di certe proteine ritenute responsabili della BSE. Questa patologia neurologica di tipo degenerativo dei bovini ad esito fatale, è molto pericolosa per l’uomo: le carni infette, se ingerite, possono dar luogo al manifestarsi di una variante umana chiamata morbo di Creutzfeldt-Jakob. Dopo l’approvazione della prima regolamentazione avvenuta nel 1997 sono stati registrati -ad oggi- negli Stati Uniti solamente 3 casi di mucca pazza.
